Cinco de Mayo at LSO

Today is Cinco de Mayo, which as you all may know, literally means “5th of May”.  Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday that is celebrated regionally in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla; Where the Mexican army had an unlikely victory over French forces in 1862. [1] It is not Mexico’s Independence Day, but it is a day of great significance.

In the United States, it is celebrated nationwide as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.[2] Here at LSO, we decided to join in on the celebration with our Annual “Cinco de Mayo Lunch”, where all employees enjoy Tacos, Aguas Frescas, costume contests and taking potshots at the piñata. This year again, tacos were supplied courtesy of our staple Taco guy and his truck full of delicious food. The festivities began with the serving of mouth-watering Tacos; Chicken, Carne Asada or Al Pastor (Shepherd Style Pork), and to gulp it down, a serving of delicious Horchata, which everyone couldn’t get enough of in this heat.

Maria Ortiz, Winner of costume contest

To add to the fun, employees where encouraged to dress up in traditional Mexican, regional clothing and participate in a costume contest for a grand prize of $50.  Some of the employees went all out, dressing up in traditional Mexican skirts, blouses and accessories. Of course it wouldn’t be Cinco de Mayo at LSO without Omar, our Package Testing technician, and his Sombrero. While it was hard to pick a winner, Maria Ortiz came out on top and took home the prize.

Unbeknownst to the event coordinators, a competition of another kind was going on between the employees, to see who could eat the most tacos. Many came close, but the winners this year (it was a tie) were Chris Lozano and Daniel Alvarez at a grand total of 14 tacos each!

All in all it was good fun and a pleasant afternoon. Looking forward to next year, where I plan to be a serious contender in the taco eating competition.
